Morgan Heppenstall Company Profile

Heppenstall/Blaw-Knox Company Profile

Heppenstall was founded in 1889 in Pittsburgh by Sam Heppenstall, but the company’s roots actually reach back much farther and across the Atlantic Ocean. Sam’s ancestor, George Heppenstall, started working in the steel business in Sheffield, England, way back in 1792.

The seeds of Blaw-Knox began in 1904 when Jacob B. Blaw of Pittsburgh had an idea for collapsible steel concrete forms to use in sewer construction. By 1917, Mr. Blaw’s company merged with Luther Knox’s pressed and welded steel company, and Blaw-Knox was born. That merger expanded the business from forms to include water-cooled equipment for steel plants, structural steel, and buckets.

Meanwhile, Heppenstall built a reputation as the world’s premier manufacturer of tongs. Heppenstall and Blaw-Knox merged, creating a below-the-hook powerhouse.

In 2010, Heppenstall and Blaw Knox joined the Morgan family of companies.
